Steven Heller (born July 7, 1950) is an American art director, journalist, critic, author, illustrator, and editor who specializes on topics related to graphic design.
Heller is author and co-author of many works on the history of illustration, typography, and many subjects related to graphic design. He has published more than eighty titles and written articles for magazines including Affiche, Baseline, Creation, Design, Design Issues, Design Observer, Eye, Graphis, How, I.D., Oxymoron, Mother Jones, The New York Times Book Review, Print, Speak, and U&lc magazine.
Steven Heller（生于1950年7月7日）是美国艺术总监，记者，评论家，作家，插画家和编辑，专门研究与平面设计相关的主题。

For more than 33 years Steven Heller has been art directing at The New York Times. More specifically, for 29 years he has been art directing its Sunday Book Review section. During those years, Steven has given the Times and its readers a front row seat to great illustration by commissioning the best illustrators for nearly all of the Book Review’s cover and much of its interior content. He has also jumpstarted the careers of a boatload of budding illustrators and artists.

That alone would be more than enough to merit Steven the Society of Illustrators Richard Gangel Award for Art Direction. But it is his body of work beyond that of his duties at the Times that is a true testament to his commitment to the field. Steven has written, co-written, or edited extensively in professional journals, trade publications, and nearly 60 books on graphic design, graphic design history and influence, typography, illustration, education, and business. He is the editor of the AIGA Journal of Graphic Design that can be found on the AIGA website. The Journal posts articles written by him and others covering a wide range of topics concerning designers, art directors, photographers, illustrators, and anyone else in the graphic design industry.

It is difficult, if not confounding, to estimate the impact Steven Heller has had on the graphic design industry. After all, he is still forging new tracks for us to follow. Steven’s continuing impact, influence, and pursuit of excellence make his commitment to illustration so meaningful to those of us who practice the art of illustration. For these reasons it makes his receiving this Society of Illustrators 48th Illustration Annual Dick Gangel Award for Art Direction so right.

He has produced or been curator of a number of exhibitions, including “Art Against War,” “The Satiric Image: Painters as Cartoonists and Caricaturists,” “The Malik Verlag,” and “The Art of Simplicissumus: Germany’s Most Influential Satire Magazine,” among them. He has organized various conferences, including The School of Visual Arts’ “How We Learn What We Learn,” devoted to the future of design education, and the AIGA’s “Looking Closer: Graphic Design History and Criticism.”

Heller is also the recipient of the AIGA Medal for Lifetime Achievement in 1999, the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame Special Educators Award in 1996, The Pratt Institute Herschel Levitt Award in 2000, and the Society of Illustrators Richard Gangel Award for Art Direction in 2006.
